I am never here to criticize
another individual's efforts to help victims but there are some public figures
who can often verbally render more harm than good. Seen as experts, often their
public comments take victim's families into little consideration and even have
the potential to compromise an investigation. If done repeatedly, it then
becomes an issue of potential social irresponsibility.

Yeah, I think there are those who may have good intentions, but are not making positive contributions to cases. Unfortunately, with the growth of social media and the Internet, I see this problem continuing to increase.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Over the course of nearly 20 years it is incredible how social media has both positively and negatively impacted cases I have worked on. It is the self-proclaimed experts that appear to thrive on attention that sometimes is very hurtful to the victim's families and another that bothers me greatly is sharing potentially confidential case information publicly that can outright compromise an entire investigation. Despite being kindly approached by victim advocates who are trying to protect the families of victims and the investigations asking them to refrain from such comments they refuse to discontinue making disparaging remarks that result in clouding public perception of the victim and/or reducing public confidence in law enforcement. I'm glad to see this topic getting some attention because at some point we have to wonder what their motivations are as it is clearly not playing a supportive role. Thanks SlamDunk!
